On July 16, 2014, NIAMS Director Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., accompanied Joshua Jacobs, M.D., Past President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), on several visits with Members of Congress and staff to describe the Institute’s musculoskeletal research portfolio and the importance of biomedical research. They met with Sen. John Barasso (R-WY), Rep. Steve Womack (R-AR), Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), and Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ), as well as staff from the offices of Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). Discussion topics included the need for personalized treatments, recognizing the importance of the NIH while being cognizant of a limited budget, the challenges faced by new and early-stage investigators, the 21st Century Cures Initiative, and the overall health impacts of musculoskeletal diseases.
