NIAMS Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary
NIAMS Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary
On Monday, June 13, 2011, the NIAMS will host its 25th Anniversary Scientific Symposium: Improving Lives Through Discovery. The Symposium will feature scientific advances made possible with NIAMS support, highlight how these advances have improved patients' lives, and address the future directions for NIAMS research. A broad array of outstanding senior and early-stage investigators will present their work, complemented by personal stories from patients who are challenged by diseases of the bones, joints, muscles, and skin.
We strongly encourage all who are interested in the progress and promise of NIAMS research to attend! The symposium is free and open to the public. Register today!

A Conversation with Dr. Helen Lu
May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. To celebrate Asian and Pacific-American contributions to science, the NIAMS is highlighting the accomplishments of Dr. Helen H. Lu, a NIAMS grantee. Dr. Lu is an associate professor of biomedical engineering and associate professor of dental and craniofacial bioengineering at Columbia University in New York. She was chosen by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to be among the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) winners for 2008.

NIH Lecture to Discuss Health Disparities
The NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series recently presented a lecture entitled “Solving the Health Disparities Conundrum: Race Relationships and Quality of Health Care.” Lisa Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, gave the lecture. The presentation can be viewed via videocast.
Health Disparities Seminar Series
The NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) sponsors the monthly Health Disparities Seminar Series, which provides information on advances, gaps and current issues related to health disparities research. It features national and international health disparities research experts, including many who are funded by NIMHD, other NIH Institutes and Centers and federal agency partners. Each seminar focuses on a specific theme.

New Calcium and Vitamin D Guidelines in NIAMS Publications
A recent report from the Institute of Medicine set new guidelines for recommended intake levels of calcium and vitamin D. The NIAMS updated more than 30 publications with this new information. The magazine includes the latest breakthroughs from NIH-supported research and features people from all walks of life talking about how they have handled their health challenges. NIAMS Audio Publications in Chinese
The NIAMS has developed six new Chinese-language audio publications for people with visual impairments and/or with limited literacy. Topics include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, acne, back pain, sprains and strains and knee problems. The NIAMS and the Montgomery County Maryland Asian American Health Initiative collaborated on the development of these publications. The publications are available for download on NIAMS’ website.
New Resources to Raise Awareness in Minority Populations about Skin Cancer
The National Cancer Institute has developed new products for African-American, Asian-American, Native-American, and Hispanic/Latino audiences to help dispel the belief that only people with light (fair) skin are at risk of skin cancer. When skin cancer is found early, it can be treated more easily.
Available in English and Spanish, the Anyone Can Get Skin Cancer brochure and complementary video provides important information on how to find skin cancer early, what skin cancer looks like and how to lower the chance of skin cancer. In recent years, an increasing number of people have been heeding their health professionals' advice to get active. Unfortunately for some, sports injuries – injuries that usually involve the musculoskeletal system – result from accidents, poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning or insufficient warm-up and stretching.

Update on the National Multicultural Outreach Initiative
The NIAMS National Multicultural Outreach Initiative is conducting audience research with adults who have diseases and conditions of the bones, joints, muscles, and skin. Focus groups and in-depth telephone interviews have been conducted in Charlotte, NC, Oakland, CA, Anchorage, AK and Oklahoma City, OK with African Americans, Hispanics and Latinos, Asians and Pacific Islanders, Alaska Natives and American Indians. Additional focus groups are being conducted in Honolulu, HI with Native Hawaiians. The information gathered from the audience research will be used to guide the development of culturally appropriate health messages and products.
The NIAMS Community Health Center (CHC)
Update on the Community Health Center
The NIAMS Community Health Center (CHC), located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC for the past 10 years, will be moving to a new location later this year. The building where the CHC is located will be renovated and as a result, the current lease will end.
Although there will be many changes in the next several months, the health and well-being of the CHC patients are the NIAMS’ first priority. More information about the changes at the NIAMS CHC will be forthcoming.
The NIAMS CHC operates as an extension of the rheumatology research program at the NIAMS in Bethesda, Maryland. The health center offers patient care with access to a specialist, health information, and referrals to clinical studies for the prevention and treatment of rheumatic diseases at no charge to patients.
