NIAMS Seeks Comments for 2010–2014 Long-Range Research Plan
Dear Colleagues:
We are seeking your comments on the current version of the NIAMS Fiscal Year (FY) 2010-2014 Long-Range Research Plan. This plan will serve as a broad scientific outline for NIAMS by identifying compelling research opportunities and needs that will inform our priority-setting process, while enabling the Institute to adapt to the rapidly changing biomedical and behavioral science landscapes. Over time, it will help propel research progress related to the understanding, diagnosis, treatment and, ultimately, prevention of arthritis, musculoskeletal and skin diseases.
We welcome your comments on any or all sections of this draft plan. It was developed with extensive input from many of you, the extramural community, as well as from NIAMS scientific staff. We also acknowledge that it is not comprehensive and that it was not possible to address all research areas.
The plan will be posted on the NIAMS Web site by early December 2009 and available for public comment for 30 days. In advance, I thank you for your contribution to this important document, which will serve the research and health mission of NIAMS.

NIH Awards $27 Million in Recovery Act Funds To Enhance Scientist and Resource Networking
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced awards that will harness the power of social networking to help scientists and students throughout the country accelerate biomedical research. The same principles and technology that enable teenagers to instantly share updates and pictures with their friends also can help researchers connect, collaborate and share resources on scientific advances better and faster. All software developed in this project will be freely available to biomedical institutions in the nonprofit sector.
Scientists Explore Ways To Predict Exercise Outcomes in People With Knee OA
Researchers funded by NIAMS have gained new insights into the value of select measurements of muscle performance in people with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Their findings shed further light on the ability of such factors to predict the therapeutic effects of exercise in people with the disease.
Trans-NIH AI/AN Work Group Web Pages Launched on NIAMS Web Site
Formed in late 2005, the Trans-NIH American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Work Group provides a forum for health education and communications staff from NIH Institutes and Centers to share strategies and effective communication approaches to develop and disseminate health information for AI/AN communities.
NIAMS Partners With CBS Cares and the Producers of HAIR on Osteoporosis Prevention Initiative
NIAMS is partnering with CBS Cares and the producers of the Tony-award-winning Broadway show HAIR on an osteoporosis initiative. Three public service announcements (PSAs) featuring HAIR cast members have been developed and are being aired on CBS stations throughout the country. The PSAs direct viewers to the CBS Cares Web site, where NIH is listed as the leading resource for research and information on osteoporosis. Visitors will also find an essay by Joan A. McGowan, Ph.D., Director of the Division of Musculoskeletal Diseases, NIAMS Extramural Program. The CBS Cares site links to the NIAMS Web site for additional information.
Statement To the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Subcommittee on Science and Space About “The Case for Space: Examining the Value”—October 21, 2009
NIAMS Director Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D., recently represented NIH at the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Subcommittee on Science and Space regarding “The Case for Space: Examining the Value.” Dr. Katz’s testimony focused on opportunities where access to the International Space Station National Laboratory facilitates research for scientists who are committed to improving the health of people on Earth.
NIAMS Announces Dr. Moen as New DERA Director
NIAMS is pleased to announce Dr. Laura Moen as the Director of the Division of Extramural Research Activities (DERA), NIAMS. As the DERA Director, Dr. Moen will oversee the Scientific Review Branch, Grants Management Branch and clinical research coordinators, as well as perform key scientific management functions, including serving as the Executive Secretary for the NIAMS Advisory Council.
NIH Announces First National Research Study Recruitment Registry
Individuals who want to participate in research studies now can connect online with researchers nationwide through the first disease-neutral, volunteer recruitment registry. ResearchMatch.org offers an easy-to-use, free and safe way for volunteers to connect with thousands of researchers who are conducting research on a wide range of diseases. The site is a collaborative effort of the national network of medical research institutions affiliated with the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSAs). The CTSA program, which is led by NIH’s National Center for Research Resources, is focused on enhancing local and national efforts to enhance the translation of laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients.

Tell NIH how you find and use health information by responding to the questions on the Consumer Health Information Web site.
Your responses will help NIH understand what health topics interest you so that we can prepare more effective health information and get it to the people who need it.
The questions—called the Consumer Health Information Request for Information (RFI)—can be completed online in English or downloaded from the Web site in Spanish.
The RFI was developed through a partnership between NIH’s Office of Communications and Public Liaison and the NIH Director’s Council of Public Representatives.

NIH Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series
NIH’s Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series (WALS) offers weekly lectures every Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Masur Auditorium, Building 10, NIH Campus. Renowned scientists from around the globe present research on a variety of topics. The lectures are Continuing Medical Education-certified lectures, open to the public and available live via Webcast.

NIH Research Matters: Virus Linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Scientists have detected the DNA of a retrovirus in the blood of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. The discovery raises the possibility that the virus may be a contributing factor in chronic fatigue syndrome.

This booklet contains general information about rheumatoid arthritis. It describes what rheumatoid arthritis is, who gets it, and diagnosis and treatment options.
