NIH Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases Program Announces Next Round of Drug Development Projects
Researchers will begin drug development projects for rare and neglected diseases that include potential treatments for a musculoskeletal disorder, a cognitive dysfunction disorder, a virus that affects the central nervous system of newborns, a parasitic worm infection, a form of muscular dystrophy and a rare lung disease. The six new projects are part of the National Institutes of Health's (NIH's) Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases program.

NIH Undergraduate Design Challenge Focuses on Technology Solutions in Health Care: NIBIB Solicits Innovative Diagnostic and Therapeutic Devices and Technology for the Underserved and Disabled
A competition for undergraduate students to foster the design and development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic devices and technologies to aid underserved populations and the disabled is being sponsored by the NIH's National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). The Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams Challenge is part of the NIBIB's efforts to build, strengthen and prepare the future workforce of biomedical engineers.

NIH Answers Call To Streamline Technology Transfer Process: Cutting-Edge Website Reduces Response Time for Unpatented Materials From Six Months to a Few Days
The NIH is launching the electronic Research Materials catalogue (eRMa) to streamline the federal government's technology transfer process. This project addresses one of the important directives in a Presidential memorandum related to the commercialization of federal research and support for high-growth business potential. eRMa was designed and developed by the Office of Technology Transfer at the NIH with support from the NIH's National Cancer Institute Center for Cancer Research.

FDA: 35 Innovative New Drugs Approved in Fiscal Year 2011
Over the past 12 months, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 35 new medicines. This is among the highest number of approvals in the past decade, surpassed only by 2009 (37). Many of the drugs are important advances for patients, including two new treatments for hepatitis C; a drug for late-stage prostate cancer; the first new drug for Hodgkin's lymphoma in 30 years; and the first new drug for lupus in 50 years.

Looking at Lupus: An Attack From Within
Lupus is a complex and mysterious disorder. It arises when the cells that are supposed to protect your body from disease mistakenly assault your own healthy cells and tissues. This attack from within can damage your joints, skin and most other parts of your body. NIH-funded scientists are working to uncover the causes of lupus and find better ways to diagnose and treat the disease.
